Twelve years ago, when Heraldry & Crests (widely known as H & C) started building its Family Name History/genealogy data base, its founders projected that as the world reached the new millennium, more and more people around the globe would experience an irresistible yearning to find out more about their own roots, more about their heritage, and more about the culture of the country of their ancestors. Based on this, the historians at H & C set out to gather a massive collection of old and rare books, centuries old manuscripts and documents, genealogy, family crests, family coat of arms, and other resource materials related to the study of family names, their origins and meanings and a subject which fascinates many people, heraldry, and genealogy.  This collection now forms the most extensive working research facility of its kind in the world.

The next step was to compile a unique data base of Family Name Histories, rooted in original research and undertaken individually for each and every history. Later, H & C undertook a detailed study of the heraldry associated with all the family names on the data base, and built an authentic matching computerized bank of ancient Family Coats of Arms which could be accessed in graphic form. It is interesting to note that each Family Coat of Arms was faithfully reproduced from detailed original artwork created by leading heraldic artists. With this form of art being a very specialized area, access to this expertise was, and still is, limited.
